YOUR RELIGION IS YOUR FAITH-Can you provide examples where religion has been a source of conflict? By Hugo Keji
Here are some examples where religion has played a significant role in fueling conflicts:
1. The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
- Background: This conflict, one of the most enduring in modern history, is deeply intertwined with religious significance. Both Jews and Muslims consider the land of Israel/Palestine to be sacred, with religious sites like Jerusalem's Temple Mount (known as Haram al-Sharif to Muslims) holding profound spiritual importance.
- Religious Dimensions: While the conflict is also political and territorial, religious narratives and identities are central. For example, Jewish claims to the land are rooted in biblical promises, while Palestinian Muslims see the territory as an integral part of the Islamic world. The religious attachment to these sites and the religious identity of the people involved exacerbate the difficulty in finding a peaceful resolution.
2. The Northern Ireland Conflict ("The Troubles")
- Background: From the late 1960s to 1998, Northern Ireland experienced a violent conflict between Protestant Unionists, who wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom, and Catholic Nationalists, who sought unification with the Republic of Ireland.
- Religious Dimensions: Although the conflict was primarily political and nationalist, religious identity played a key role. The Protestant-Catholic divide reinforced social, economic, and political divisions, making religion both a marker of identity and a source of mistrust and hostility. Religious leaders were often seen as representatives of their respective communities, further entrenching the conflict.
3. The Partition of India (1947)
- Background: The partition of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947 was accompanied by one of the largest mass migrations in history and resulted in widespread violence between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs.
- Religious Dimensions: The partition was largely along religious lines, with India becoming a majority Hindu state and Pakistan a majority Muslim state. Religious identities became a source of intense conflict, leading to massacres, forced conversions, and mass displacements. The legacy of this division continues to affect India-Pakistan relations, particularly in regions like Kashmir.

4. The Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990)
- Background: Lebanon's civil war was a complex conflict involving various religious and political factions, including Christians, Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, and Druze.
- Religious Dimensions: The war was deeply rooted in Lebanon’s religiously pluralistic society, where different religious communities sought to protect their interests. The power-sharing arrangement in Lebanon, which is based on religious representation, became a source of tension, with each group vying for influence and control. The conflict was marked by sectarian violence, and religious identity was often the basis for alliances and hostilities.
5. The Bosnian War (1992-1995)
- Background: The breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s led to a series of brutal conflicts, including the Bosnian War, which involved Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks), Orthodox Serbs, and Catholic Croats.
- Religious Dimensions: Although ethnic nationalism was the primary driver, religion was a significant factor in the conflict. The war involved ethnic cleansing and genocide, often justified through religious rhetoric. Religious identity became a marker for ethnic belonging, and religious sites were frequently targeted to demoralize and displace communities. The conflict resulted in deep-seated animosity between these religious groups, which still lingers today.
6. The Sunni-Shia Conflict in the Middle East
- Background: The division between Sunni and Shia Islam dates back to the 7th century, and it continues to fuel conflicts across the Middle East, particularly in countries like Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Bahrain.
- Religious Dimensions: This conflict is rooted in differing beliefs about the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad and has evolved into a major source of political and religious rivalry. In Iraq, sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia communities escalated after the 2003 U.S. invasion, leading to widespread bloodshed. In Syria, the Assad regime, dominated by Alawites (an offshoot of Shia Islam), has faced opposition from predominantly Sunni rebel groups, with the conflict taking on increasingly sectarian overtones.
7. The Rohingya Crisis in Myanmar
- Background: The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, have faced decades of persecution, culminating in a military crackdown in 2017 that led to accusations of genocide.
- Religious Dimensions: The conflict is driven by religious and ethnic discrimination, with the Buddhist majority in Myanmar often viewing the Rohingya as outsiders and a threat to national identity. Buddhist nationalist rhetoric has fueled anti-Muslim sentiment, leading to widespread violence, displacement, and severe human rights abuses against the Rohingya.
These examples illustrate how religion can serve as both a source of identity and division, fueling conflicts that are often complex and intertwined with other social, political, and economic factors.
