Trump says he had 'very good call' with Ukraine's Zelenskiy, pledges to end war

U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had a "very good call" on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and pledged to end the war pitting Kyiv against Moscow through negotiations.

Zelenskiy also reported his conversation with Trump and expressed thanks for U.S. military assistance. But he made no reference in a post on social media platform X to efforts to end the 28-month-old conflict.

Trump has said he will end the war in Ukraine before he even takes office in January should he win the Nov. 5 election. He has also said that had he been in office when the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, the war would not have taken place.

In his Truth Social post, Trump said that as president he "will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives."

"Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity," Trump said.

Though Trump has put forward few tangible policy proposals, he told Reuters in an interview last year that Ukraine might have to cede some territory to reach a peace agreement.

In his post, Zelenskiy said he congratulated Trump on becoming the Republican nominee and condemned the assassination attempt on him last week.

"I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future," Zelenskiy said.

"I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation's freedom and independence."

Ukraine, he said, "will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day."

Zelenskiy rejects any negotiations with Russia on ending the conflict as long as Russian troops remain in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president has proposed a peace plan, showcased again at a "world summit" last month to which Russia was not invited, that calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine's 1991 post-Soviet borders.

Russian troops occupy about 20% of Ukrainian territory. Moscow's forces have made incremental gains in the east of the country along the 1,000-km (600-mile) front since capturing the key city of Avdiivka in February.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy to BBC: We have to work with the U.S

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged in an interview published on Thursday that a victory for Donald Trump in the U.S. election in November would be difficult for his country but Ukrainians were prepared.

Trump's choice of Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate has underscored how Washington's stand on Ukraine, locked in a 28-month-old war with Russia, could change if he won the election. Vance is on record in an interview as saying "I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other."

Zelenskiy, speaking to the BBC while attending the European Political Community meeting in London, noted the comment, but added: "Maybe he really doesn't care, but we have to work with the United States."

Trump's election, he said in remarks on the BBC website, would be "hard work, but we are hard workers".

The administration of Joe Biden has provided weapons and supplies throughout the conflict, though the flow of assistance was halted for months by disputes within the U.S. Congress.

Trump has said during the campaign that, once elected, he would bring the conflict to an end even before taking office by securing a deal at the negotiating table. He said there would have been no conflict at all had he been in office when Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

In other comments to the BBC, Zelenskiy said Ukraine was thankful for pledges from its partners to supply F-16 fighter jets, most likely this summer, though they had not yet arrived.

"It’s been 18 months and the planes have not reached us," Zelenskiy told the BBC.

The planes, he said, were essential to help Ukrainians resist Russia's aerial dominance and "unblock the skies".

He said he anticipated no change in Britain's support for Ukraine, but hoped new Prime Minister Keir Starmer would "become special - speaking about international politics, about defending world security, about the war in Ukraine."

Ukraine, he said, "doesn’t just need a new page, we need power to turn this leaf".

Ukraine's Zelenskiy attends UK cabinet, renews calls on long-range missiles

Britain's PM Keir Starmer meets Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed British government ministers on Friday, a rare appearance by a foreign leader at a cabinet meeting that new Prime Minister Keir Starmer hopes will underline London's support for Kyiv.

A day after hosting a forum of European leaders at Blenheim Palace, Starmer pressed on with his bid to raise Britain's role in international affairs by inviting Zelenskiy to address his cabinet of top ministers. The last foreign leader to do so was U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1997, Starmer's office said.

Welcomed to the meeting by a standing ovation and applause from British ministers, Zelenskiy renewed his call for Western allies to allow long-range strikes on Russia, saying Britain should try to convince its partners to remove the limits on their use.

"Right now we are missing the main answer to this question and that is our long-range capability," Zelenskiy said at the beginning of the meeting in Downing Street. "Please convince the other partners to remove the limits."

NATO members have taken different approaches to how Ukraine can use weapons they donate. Some have made clear Kyiv can use them to strike targets inside Russia while the United States has taken a narrower approach, allowing its weapons to be used only just inside Russia's border against targets supporting Russian military operations in Ukraine.

Starmer, who met Zelenskiy separately for 35 minutes before a wider bilateral with officials, told Zelenskiy that Britain would speed up delivery of aid to Ukraine.

His defence minister said earlier this month that the deliveries promised by the former Conservative government would be delivered within 100 days.

"Ukraine is, and always will be, at the heart of this government's agenda and so it is only fitting that President Zelenskiy will make a historic address to my cabinet," Starmer had said in a statement before the meeting.

Britain has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 and Starmer swiftly reaffirmed London's commitment to Kyiv after winning a landslide election earlier this month, telling Zelenskiy at NATO that despite the change of government, there would be "no change of approach".

He said on Thursday that Britain would pursue a new plan to try to disrupt Russia's attempts to evade shipping sanctions. On Thursday, Britain announced sanctions on 11 vessels used to transport Russian oil.

He also unveiled the Defence Export Support Treaty, to be signed by defence ministers, that will enable Ukraine to draw on 3.5 billion pounds ($4.5 billion) of export finance, to bolster both countries' defence industrial bases and boost production.
