If you are a bit nervous about the credit check that a landlord is going to do on you to move into an apartment, then you are not alone. The number that needs to show up on your credit report is going to depend on the apartment and some of the requirements that the landlord has. In general, if the rent is higher for an apartment, then the landlord is likely going to ask you to have a higher credit score to ensure that you can afford the apartment.

The good news is if you have been making your payments on time and have a wide mix of different types of credit on your report, then your score is probably high. It is still possible to get into an apartment if your credit score is not perfect, but you will need to take some extra steps to help show the new landlord that you are capable of paying the rent on time and won’t stiff them. Some of the things you can consider doing includes:

# Secure a co-signer: This co-signer not only shows that you are a good tenant, but they will assume the financial and legal responsibilities to handle the rent if you decide to not make the payments. They will be another person for the landlord to go after to get their money.

# Have your credit report and recent pay stubs: You may need to take the time to explain to the potential landlord any of the blemishes that show up on the credit report and some proof that you are working to handle it. If you make enough income, the landlord may be willing to still work with you.

# Pay a few months rent ahead of time: If you are able to manage this, you can provide the landlord with two or three months rent upfront so that they see you are serious about making your payments and not running out on them. They can have the money right away instead of worrying.
