The global gene therapy market is estimated to grow from $2.4 billion in 2024 to $16.5 billion by 2035, representing a CAGR of 19.25% during the forecast period till 2035.

In recent years, gene therapy has been demonstrated to be a promising solution for patients suffering from severe inherited disorders. These therapies have shown remarkable outcomes in enhancing the life expectancy of patients suffering from severe conditions, such as AIDS, cancer, cystic fibrosis and diabetes. Further, with the rise in the R&D activity in this domain along with advancements in gene editing technologies, an increasing number of novel gene therapies are likely to be commercialized in the coming years. It is worth highlighting that, according to Robert M. Califf, the former commissioner of the USFDA, more than ten gene therapies are anticipated to receive approval annually, by 2025.

Since 2015, more than 60 merger and acquisition instances have been reported by various stakeholders engaged in gene therapy industry. There has been a consistent upward trend in the consolidation activity within the gene therapy domain, growing at a CAGR of 22.22%, since 2015. This can be attributed to the rise in demand for gene therapies and increased competition within this domain, which has further prompted the gene therapy companies to diversify their product portfolios.

Most of the acquisition deals in the gene therapy industry were focused on providing access to novel technology / platform to the acquirer company. This is followed by acquisitions undertaken for therapeutic area consolidation (24%). Further, 13% acquisitions were instances, wherein the acquirer company aimed to expand its product portfolio / enter the gene therapy domain through the acquisition of companies offering gene therapy products.

Several patents have been granted / filed by academia and industry stakeholders, exclusively for gene therapies. During our research, we were able to identify more than 5,370 patents filed / granted in this domain since 2017. There has been a steady increase in the number of patents published, which is indicative of continuous research in this domain. This can be attributed to the several advantages offered by gene therapies, including target specificity, high efficacy and reduced off-side toxicity.

Most of the patents (54%) were filed / granted in North America, followed by those filed in Europe (14%) and Asia-Pacific (2%). It is also worth mentioning that 30% of the total patent applications were submitted to WIPO, from across the globe. Further, over the last few years, despite large number of patents that have been filed (and hence having a long remaining patent life), only 1% of the total patents have a significantly higher relative valuation, based on the relevant parameters and cut-off of the weighted score considered for this analysis.  Additionally, the majority of the patent applicants are industry players; however, the contribution of non-industry players in this domain has also increased considerably.

Given the vast potential of gene therapies, several investors have extended financial support. During our research, we came across more than 566 funding instances focused on gene therapies, since 2015, which amounted to a total of more than USD 36,375 million. The overall trend of investments being made in the field of gene therapy has been very promising with over USD 36,375 million being invested in this domain, since 2015 It is worth highlighting that close to 44% of the total investment (in terms of the amount invested) was made during 2021 and 2022.

Additionally, gene therapy companies have raised a significant amount of capital through venture capital rounds. In fact, a number of players in this domain have managed to secure significant capital through grants as well. This is indicative of the fact that the market is characterized by the presence of established companies as well as new entrants with financial support from angel investors and government institutions.

The maximum number of funding instances was reported by companies based in North America, during the given time period. This is followed by companies based in Europe that participated across several funding instances and raised 10.8% of the overall funding amount.
